  • Digital guide to their best culinary spots in Sligo for 2021

  • 65 pages dedicated to Sligo’s vibrant food scene

Hans and Gaby Wieland, founders of Sligo Food Tours have today launched a new Sligo Food Tours eBook, featuring a digital guide to the very best culinary hotspots and food producers in Sligo. The eBook also includes interviews with Sligo chefs and cafe and restaurant owners as well as the story of Sligo’s food history.

Hans and Gaby need no introduction to those in the food world in Ireland. Advocates of organic food, they have spent their lives dedicated to sharing food skills and knowledge and championing local food producers.

Hans was working and teaching at The Organic Centre in Leitrim for 22 years, whilst Gaby has run her homeopathy clinic and wrote a successful Neantog Cookbook which is now in its 6th edition. They also run their own organic farm ‘Neantog Farm’ in Cliffony, North Sligo.

In 2019, they launched Sligo Food Tours, 3hr guided tours around some of Sligo town’s foodie hotspots and were just beginning to book tours in for the 2020 summer season when the Covid pandemic hit, shutting cafes, restaurants and local shops.

Commenting on this, Hans Wieland said: “We have used our time during lockdown to continue to champion our local food heroes through our blog and have featured regular interviews with local chefs, cafe owners and food producers. As the future still looks uncertain, we have put our efforts into a new eBook, a self-guide to the best culinary hotspots in Sligo town which make the perfect accompaniment to anyone visiting the area this summer.”

Commenting on the launch of their new eBook, Irish culinary star Darina Allen, founder of Ballymaloe Cookery School, said: “I love, love, love Sligo and can't wait for the Sligo Food Tours eBook to be up online with so many hidden treasures to discover…”

Nevin Maguire, Irish celebrity chef and owner of MacNean House, also said “One of the joys of living in Blacklion is that it is just a short spin up the road to our neighbours in Sligo and their fabulous food scene. One of my ideal days off is to head off with Amelda, Connor and Lucia, take a roundabout and end up in Mullaghmore at Eithna’s By the Sea Restaurant. I wish Hans and Gaby every success with their Sligo Food Tours ebook.”

The new eBook features interviews with Lyons Cafe Gary Stafford, Alan Fitsmaurice of the Glasshouse Hotel, Paul Brennan of Flipside, Brid Torrades of Osta Cafe, Carolanne Rushe of Sweet Beat Cafe, as well as Carrow Coffee founders Andrew Willis and Paola Bon, Tir Na Nog shop stalwarts Mary McDonnell and Kathleen McGowan among many others.
